Call for Data

Help us with providing data for the European Database on Jewish Archaeology

European Database

A general survey has been initiated of past and present projects on the archaeology of European Jewish settlements. Contact was made with officials of antiquities services connected with the Council of Europe, as well as with city governments, museums, and universities known to have participated in projects relevant for Jewish Archaeology.

Because of the present haphazard distribution of the data—as well as the frequent lack of communication between archaeologists working in different parts of Europe—it was decided to begin the construction of an online database that could centralize and make available data on Jewish Archaeology. The database will be designed to be accessible via the Internet with the possibility of uploading data. In order to facilitate this data collection, a major effort will be made to solicit information directly from scholars and heritage professionals throughout Europe.

Two excavation areas: one 2x4m trench (Klueger House 1:KL1) extending from the retaining wall into the yard and the second trench (Kleuger House 2:KL2) was a small exposure excavated under the floorboards of the basement. Nothing was found suggesting that Klueger House occupants were Jews, other than the absence of pig bones or shells, which were forbidden foods.

  • Sources: http://www.enamecenter.org/downloads/memory_identity/Oswiecim_report.pdf
  • Potential for Excavation/Research: Good. Other parts of the Jewish Quarter could be explored before any further demolition or renovation takes place. Intact stratigraphic deposits and more evidence on diet and material identity should be investigated.
